When the nerves inside your teeth are stimulated, a message is sent to your brain communicating a number of different sensations. These nerves inside your teeth carry the signals for pressure, hot, cold and PAIN to the brain.
Causes of tooth aches:
1. Tooth Decay or Cavities
Tooth decay (cavities) is the most common cause of tooth pain. Tooth decay is the destruction of the tooth by harmful acids secreted by bacteria in the mouth. Dr. Nugent will take advanced digital X-rays to examine your teeth for decay
2. Gum Disease
Gum disease (periodontal disease) can cause painful gum tissue. Poor oral hygiene and skipping dental cleanings allow bacteria and calculus to accumulate on your teeth. The bacteria collect in the gum tissue where they release toxins that damage the gums and underlying bone. The gum tissue becomes red, swollen and painful. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adult Americans. Dr. Nugent will formulate a plan to stop and eliminate your gum disease. Dr. Nugent wants you to keep you natural teeth. Dr. Nugent and his wonderful hygienist are experts in providing care for people with gum disease.
3. Root Sensitivity
If you experience mild temperature sensitivity or if your teeth are sensitive to “sweets” you may have exposed root surfaces. Recession of the gum tissue leads to sensitivity. The exposed roots are more easily stimulated. The good news is that often over the counter “sensitivity toothpaste” is very good at preventing root sensitivity. Dr. Nugent can also prescribe prescription tooth sensitivity toothpaste. Furthermore, Dr. Nugent can do minimal noninvasive procedure to the exposed root surface if toothpastes do not prevent the root sensitive.
4. Cracked / Fractured Teeth
Pain when biting on food and relief from pain after you release often indicates a cracked tooth or fractured tooth. A cracked tooth is very unpredictable and you should see Dr. Nugent as soon as possible. The first course of action is to crown the cracked tooth to help prevent the crack from expanding.
5. Jaw Pain , Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) Disorder
TMJ disorder is an inflammatory reaction where the lower jaw meats the base of the skull. Factors that cause TMJ disorder includes bruxism (Night grinding or teeth grinding), stress, and arthritis.
6. Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth often fail to fully erupt into the correct position. They can partially erupt leaving gum tissue partially covering the tooth. Food and bacteria can get under the flap of tissue causing pain. Also, the failed eruption of the wisdom teeth often causes pain due to the pressure they place on other teeth. Lastly, wisdom tooth can become completely impacted and require surgical extraction by an oral surgeon.
